Two-step verification or “Two Factor Authentication” (2FA) is a simple solution to better secure your accounts. Using a strong password is essential, but a password alone does not provide sufficient protection.
Two-step verification prevents hackers or fraudsters from accessing your accounts, even if they know your password. You make it more difficult for them by using two different forms of identification.
Activate two-step verification wherever possible. It's simple and secure.
Did you know? Using Itsme or a digipass for online banking are also forms of 2FA.
To access your online accounts, you must prove your identity, for example with a password. When you activate 2FA, you add a second form of identification in addition to your password. You have three options:
- your password or PIN (something only you know)
- a code you receive on your phone or authentication app (something only you have)
Examples of apps: Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator.
- your fingerprint, your face, your iris... (something only you have)
Usually, you use one of these factors, often a password, to prove who you are, but it is better to use two or more factors: this is two-factor or multi-factor authentication (2FA or MFA). For example, you use a password and, on top of that, you also have a code sent to your mobile phone, or you use your fingerprint and an authentication app to gain access.

- Start with your email account
- Activate it on websites where you leave your bank details: online shops, websites for booking holiday accommodation, websites for booking tickets, websites for resale, etc.
- Secure your social media with 2FA
In short, make it a habit to use it wherever it is available.
Although the activation of 2FA varies from platform to platform, the steps are generally quite similar. Discover the different steps and our detailed tutorials.
